Adopting a dog or cat in Morocco: the complete guide

Where to adopt a dog or cat in Morocco, questions to ask yourself, costs to plan for and the first days at home: everything you need to adopt responsibly.

Morocco has many abandoned dogs and cats, and many associations looking for families. Adopting means giving an animal a second chance, but it’s also a commitment of 10 to 15 years or more. Here’s how to do it well.

Before adopting: the right questions

Take time to answer honestly:

  • Do I have time? A dog needs walks every day. A cat needs attention too.
  • Is my home suitable? Size, balcony, landlord’s rules.
  • What budget? Food, vet, vaccines, neutering, sitting during holidays.
  • Who will look after it when I travel?
  • Does everyone at home agree? Including any allergies.

An animal isn’t a gift to give on impulse. Adopt when you’re ready, not under pressure.

Where to adopt in Morocco?

  • Animal welfare associations: in Casablanca, Rabat, Marrakech, Tangier, Agadir and other cities. They know each animal’s personality and often give them vaccinated or neutered.
  • Shelters and refuges: visit, talk with volunteers.
  • Individuals: someone who found a kitten, or who can no longer keep their pet.
  • Community apps: like the Adoption section of DarPaws, where people post animals to adopt for free.

Be wary of ads that “give away” animals but ask for a lot of money, or that refuse any meeting.

Dog or cat, young or adult?

Puppy / kitten Adult
Education everything to learn often already trained
Personality still forming already known
Energy very high more stable
Adoption quick often waiting longer

Adult and senior animals are adopted less. Yet they’re often calm, affectionate and already house-trained.

Costs to plan for

  • Vet check-up on arrival;
  • Vaccines and deworming;
  • Neutering if not done;
  • Equipment: bowls, bed, lead, carrier, litter tray;
  • Food every month;
  • Sitting when you travel.

The first days at home

  1. Prepare a quiet corner with a bed, water and, for a cat, a litter tray.
  2. Let it explore at its own pace. Don’t force contact.
  3. Keep a routine: meals, walks and bedtime at regular times.
  4. Limit visits in the first days.
  5. Book a vet visit in the first week.

A cat may hide for several days: that’s normal. A dog may have accidents or be anxious when left alone: patience and gentleness.

Adoption and the law

Responsible adoption also means identifying your pet (microchip if possible), vaccinating it against rabies and not letting it wander. Associations can guide you on local practices.

Stray animals: how to help without adopting

You can’t adopt, but you want to act? There are many ways to help the animals in your neighbourhood:

  • Fostering: you look after an animal for a few weeks until it finds a permanent family. Associations often provide food and care.
  • Volunteering: feeding, cleaning shelters, driving animals to the vet.
  • Donations: food, blankets, or money for care and neutering.
  • Sharing: spreading adoption posts on your social networks helps enormously.
  • Reporting: if you see an injured animal, contact a local association.

If you feed cats or dogs in the street, give clean water and suitable food, not spicy leftovers. And find out about neutering programmes: it’s the most effective long-term way to reduce the number of abandoned animals.

Every small action counts. A shared post can be the one that finds a dog its family.

FAQ

Is adoption free? On community apps and with many individuals, yes. Associations sometimes ask for a contribution to cover vaccines and neutering.

Can I adopt if I live in a flat? Yes, with the right choice: a cat, or a dog adapted to the space and walked enough.

What if adoption doesn’t work out? Contact the association or the previous owner. Never abandon an animal in the street.
