Spaying and neutering in Morocco: 2026 prices, best age and what to expect

How much does it cost to spay or neuter a cat or dog in Morocco in 2026? Indicative prices, the best age, how the surgery works and aftercare, explained simply.

Spaying and neutering are among the questions Moroccan pet owners ask most: how much does it cost, at what age, does it hurt, is it really necessary? Here is a clear guide to help you decide calmly with your vet.

Why spay or neuter your cat or dog?

Neutering (castration for males, spaying for females) has well-known benefits:

  • no unwanted litters: Morocco already has a very large number of stray animals;
  • less roaming: a male who smells a female in heat can travel kilometres;
  • less urine marking and night-time yowling in cats;
  • lower risk of some health problems, such as uterine infections in females.

Neutering doesn’t change your pet’s personality. They stay playful and affectionate, and are often simply calmer.

How much does it cost in Morocco in 2026?

Prices depend on the species, sex, weight and city. In Casablanca and Rabat, prices are often higher because of rents and clinic equipment. The ranges below are indicative, based on clinics and guides published online in 2026:

Procedure Indicative range
Neutering a male cat about 200 to 800 MAD
Spaying a female cat more than a male (longer surgery)
Neutering a male dog depends on the dog’s weight
Spaying a female dog the most expensive, depends on weight

The price usually includes anaesthesia and surgery, but not always blood tests, the cone or medication. Ask for a detailed quote and compare two or three clinics.

Tip: animal welfare associations regularly run low-cost neutering campaigns. Ask the ones in your city.

At what age?

  • Cats: often around 5 to 6 months, before the first heat.
  • Dogs: depends on breed size. Small dogs can be neutered earlier than large breeds, which keep growing for longer.

Your vet chooses the right time based on breed, weight and health. There is no strict upper age limit for a healthy adult.

How does the surgery work?

  1. The night before: your pet fasts (no food in the evening; your vet gives you the exact time).
  2. On the day: check-up, anaesthesia, then the surgery, which takes 20 minutes to an hour depending on the animal.
  3. Waking up: most pets go home the same day.

Aftercare

The first days matter:

  • keep your pet calm and warm on the evening of the surgery;
  • stop them licking the wound (cone or recovery suit);
  • watch the scar: redness, swelling or discharge means call the vet;
  • go to the follow-up appointment, often after about ten days.

After neutering, energy needs drop. Switch to a “neutered” diet and keep an eye on weight.

Common myths

  • “She should have one litter first”: false, it isn’t needed for her health.
  • “He’ll get fat”: only if you don’t adjust his food. The right diet and exercise are enough.
  • “It’s unnatural”: it’s above all an effective way to reduce the number of abandoned animals.

How to choose the clinic

Price isn’t the only criterion. Before booking, ask the clinic a few simple questions:

  • What type of anaesthesia do you use, and is the animal monitored while waking up?
  • Is a blood test recommended before surgery, especially for an older pet?
  • What’s included in the price: cone, pain relief, follow-up visit?
  • Who do I contact if a problem appears in the evening or at the weekend?

A serious clinic answers clearly and gives you written instructions for the night before and the days after. Don’t hesitate to ask other owners in your neighbourhood for their opinion: word of mouth is still very reliable in Morocco.

If your budget is tight, ask local associations: in Casablanca, Rabat, Marrakech or Agadir, some run low-cost neutering campaigns, especially for street cats that families feed. Neutering a neighbourhood cat also prevents dozens of abandoned kittens within a few years.

The day you pick your pet up, take a towel or blanket for the car ride home, and plan to stay with them that evening. Most pets are sleepy for a few hours and back to normal within a day or two.

FAQ

Is it painful? The surgery is done under anaesthesia, and the vet gives pain relief for the following days.

Can a cat in heat be spayed? It’s possible, but vets often prefer to wait until the heat is over. Ask yours.

Is my adopted pet already neutered? Ask the association or previous owner, and check with your vet.
