Boarding or pet sitter: which is best for your dog or cat?
Boarding kennel, cattery, home visits or a sitter's home: pros, cons and prices of each option in Morocco to choose the right care for your pet.
You’re going away for a few days and your pet can’t come. Two big options: a boarding facility (kennel or cattery) or a pet sitter, who visits your home or welcomes your pet into theirs. Neither is better in every case: it depends on your pet, the length of your trip and your budget.
Option 1: professional boarding
A boarding facility hosts several animals in a dedicated space, with staff.
Pros:
- staff present all day, sometimes a vet on call;
- adapted spaces, play areas for dogs;
- well suited to long stays.
Cons:
- an unfamiliar, sometimes noisy place: some pets get stressed;
- contact with other animals (vaccines required);
- availability is limited during holidays.
In Casablanca, some cage-free boarding places advertise about 100 MAD a day for a cat and 130 MAD a day for a dog (prices published in the lifestyle press). Prices vary by city and service.
Option 2: the pet sitter at your home
The sitter comes to your home once or several times a day: food, water, litter, walk, play.
Pros:
- your pet stays in its territory, ideal for cats;
- its routine changes little;
- the house looks lived-in.
Cons:
- your pet is alone between visits;
- not ideal for a dog that can’t bear solitude;
- you give your keys: trust is essential.
Option 3: boarding at the sitter’s home
Your pet goes to live with the sitter for the duration of your trip, often as the only guest or with few others.
Pros:
- a family atmosphere, constant presence;
- more personal attention than at a large facility.
Cons:
- a new place to discover;
- check the sitter’s home is secure (balcony, garden, other animals).

Which choice for which pet?
- Cat: it usually prefers to stay home. Home visits are often the best option.
- Sociable, energetic dog: boarding or a sitter’s home, with walks and play.
- Anxious or senior dog: a sitter’s home, in a calm environment.
- Pet on medication: choose someone experienced, and leave written instructions.
Before you leave, in any case
- Check vaccines are up to date.
- Prepare food for the whole stay, plus a little extra.
- Leave a sheet with habits, the vet’s contact and yours.
- Arrange a trial (a short stay or visit) before a long trip.
- Ask the sitter to send photos.
Questions to ask a boarding facility
If you choose boarding, visit before booking. A good facility is happy to welcome a visit. Ask:
- Are dogs in cages, in kennels or free in shared spaces?
- How many outings per day, and how long?
- Who is there at night?
- Which vaccines are required for the other animals?
- What happens if your pet falls ill: which vet, who tells you?
- Can you bring its food, bed and toy?
Also look at cleanliness, smell, noise and the condition of the animals already there. If they seem calm and well cared for, that’s a good sign.
For a cat, ask whether the cattery is separate from the dogs: barking stresses cats a lot. And if your pet has never been looked after, test a single night first before leaving for a week.
When you pick your pet up, ask how the stay went: appetite, sleep, behaviour. It helps you choose the same place, or another, next time.
FAQ
How much does home sitting cost compared to boarding? It depends on the number of visits per day. For a cat with one visit a day, it’s often comparable or cheaper.
Can I leave my cat alone for a weekend? Even with plenty of food, it’s risky: a spilled water bowl or a health problem can become serious. One visit a day is the minimum.
What if my pet gets sick while I’m away? Leave the sitter your vet’s contact and agree in advance how to handle an emergency.
